What is a Scrum Master? When answering the question βwhat is a Scrum Master,β I always say that a Scrum Master is like a force multiplier in the sense that they make a team multiple times better, on the condition that they are really good at what they do. In essence, Scrum Masters are true leaders that serve the Scrum team and organisation by helping and ensuring that everyone is following the Scrum Guide. For this reason and purpose, the Scrum Master is an essential component of product development, and delivery. Without a skilled and experienced Scrum Master, a team could risk falling apart and delivering sub-par product quality. Scrum Masters are therefore like the butter to your peanut-butter sandwich; without it, you are missing an integral ingredient.Β
So what exactly does a Scrum Master do?
As you know, a Scrum Master is typically a jack of all trades, and has probably worked as either a Developer or Product Owner at some point in their career.
Scrum Masters help their team by:
π Coaching the team in self-management and cross-functionality. π Helping teams focus on creating high-value increments and meeting the Definition of Done.π Removing barriers to teamβs progress. π Ensuring that the Scrum Team stays productive, positive, and time-focused.
The aim of all of this is to make the working environment and process easier, more time-efficient, and balanced. They are also accountable for defining Scrum and must assist the rest of the team and organisation with understanding Scrum theory and practice.
Scrum Masters also help Product Owners with:
π Finding techniques to achieve Product Goal(s) definition and Product Backlog management.π Establishing clear Product Backlog items. π Implementing empirical product planning. π Facilitating and supporting Stakeholder collaboration and transparency.
What Is A Great Scrum Master?
A really great Scrum Master is someone that is genuinely invested into seeing a team and product succeed. They genuinely help a team follow the Scrum Guide, remove productivity barriers, and guide a team on where exactly they should be going. A great Scrum Master is also subtle and discreet as they move in and out of processes with ease by empowering team members to be independent and responsible, instead of the Scrum Master dictating to everyone what to do.
The Impact of a Great Scrum Master is:
π Enhanced team collaboration and transparency. π Empowered team members. π Quicker product delivery and time-to-market. π Increased productivity. π Well-defined objectives and Product Goal(s).
