So, you want to become a Scrum Master? That’s great! The world of Scrum is both fascinating, intriguing and packed with opportunities for growth. I am always very excited when people come to me expressing their desire to learn more about the world of Scrum and with that being said, I am equally intrigued to know the reasons why people want to become Scrum Masters and even more importantly, what their knowledge of Scrum actually is.

Having at least a basic foundation of knowledge and understanding of what Scrum entails is important because I have seen way too many times people with no knowledge or experience at all in an agile environment have a pretty difficult time when transitioning to a Scrum Master accountability.

This is not to say that you cannot enroll on the Scrum Master course without prior knowledge or experience, I simply recommend having a level of experience and knowledge of the Scrum Guide, and what working in Agile actually entails, before becoming a Scrum Master.

In addition, you should ensure these important things:

🚀 Find a mentor or peer group of other Scrum Masters or practitioners. This is a great way to involve yourself in a space where you can brainstorm new ideas and learn more about Scrum.

🚀 Learn and get training on Scrum. It is easy to feel like you know everything when you have nobody to talk to. I therefore advise that you learn as much as you can and speak to as many experts as you can so that you can continue growing.

Becoming a Scrum Master is no easy feat and it will require you think outside the box, step outside of your comfort zone and question everything.
