Among the five Scrum Values, courage is one that is spoken about a lot, and for a very important reason. Courage is important because courage is not about the absence of fear or discomfort, courage is about having fear and discomfort, and doing something anyway.

So when we are working as a team, going through various changes or dealing with conflict around us it is only natural that we are going to feel uncomfortable. There might even be some fear and distrust involved. These feelings are a natural response to the unknown as we are not entirely sure how to navigate around these variables.

The key to overcoming these challenges is therefore to find the courage and do it anyway so that we can work through it; if we do not speak up or do not point issues out then we are not displaying courage, and consequently can’t move towards fixing any issues in our team or organisation as a whole.

Courage is therefore an important Scrum Value because it helps with:

🚀 Building high-quality products.

🚀 Growing a team. 🚀

Facilitating and encouraging upskilling.

🚀 Combating complex problems.

🚀 Fostering transparency.

🚀 Stimulating a culture of helpfulness and collaboration.
