As a Scrum Master and Trainer, I have come across a variety of clients and students. And in my experience working with clients and helping them transition from a traditional way of managing work to an Agile and Scrum way of producing work, I have found that a lot of people on this journey are actually Project Managers.
I find this quite interesting because I too started as a Project Manager before I was introduced to the world of Scrum and Agile. Even Project Managers that have never heard of Scrum or Agile before are surprised to learn that they have been using very similar principles and practices in their career as Project Managers, at least that was the realisation for me.
And so when Project Managers participate in a training course on Scrum, I often find that they already have a surface level knowledge of what Scrum is, and the Scrum Training Course is actually an add-on to their existing knowledge, providing them with more in-depth knowledge and insight into the working world of Scrum and Agile.
So, why do I encourage Project Managers to learn Scrum?
My surprising answer to that question is that I think the strength of learning about Scrum and Agile is not that it is the answer to everything but rather that it supports and facilitates using the right tool for the right problem. Furthermore, it fosters continual growth, accountability and progression.
For me, these qualities are what truly set Scrum and Agile ways of working apart from traditional project management, and it is why I think that organisations who have put in the work and effort to learn and adopt Scrum and Agile into their work processes and working environments as a whole, prove themselves to be the most competitive in an incredibly fierce market today.
